Care homes to shut as new strategy is ushered in

THE fate of elderly residents in five Peterborough care homes has been sealed.

THE fate of elderly residents in five Peterborough care homes has been sealed.Relatives of residents listened yesterday as Peterborough City Council's cabinet voted to approve the Older Person's Accommodation Strategy. It will see Coneygree Lodge, at Stanground, Peverels at Dogsthorpe and The Croft at Eye close close. Greenwood House, at Thorpe Road and Welland House, at Dogsthorpe, will be redeveloped for residents with specialist needs.

Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, Diane Lamb, said there was no other choice, despite residents' upset over the closures, especially that of Peverels.

She said: "They are not fit for purpose and it is important we have great facilities for old people to live in. People are very worried and upset and we had a meeting with them. However, understanding the reasons does not change the fact they do not want their home to close. We have now talked to relatives and reassured them that groups of friends will be kept together and some of the staff will go with them.

"We want to reassure them that we, with NHS Peterborough, will give them full support."

Councillor Marco Cereste added: "It is a very difficult and heart-rending subject for us all to deal with and we must make sure we do this with as much care and understanding as we possibly can."
