Cameras at danger road are finally operational
SPEED cameras have finally been switched on at an accident blackspot road near Ramsey.
Cambridgeshire County Council revealed yesterday that average speed cameras they installed at riverside road Forty Foot Bank were “fully functional”.
The installation of the cameras began in March, after the Government approved them in December 2009.
They cost £350,000 and their state-of-the-art design means they can stay sturdy despite the unusual Fen soil conditions alongside the water.
Technology means the cameras do not need a hard-wired link between sites, which is required by most systems.
The installation at Forty Foot Bank is the first scheme of its kind in the country.
It was called for by councillors and residents, following a number of deaths on the 50mph road, many involving vehicles which went into the water after carrying out dangerous manoeuvres or driving at speed - some up to 100mph.
County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Access, Councillor Mac McGuire, said: “I am pleased that the cameras are now fully functional.
“Speed has been an element in many of the accidents on this stretch of road and these new generation cameras will play an important part in ensuring that drivers keep to the speed limit and drive safely.
