Cab driver’s attack fears

A TAXI driver says he may stop working nights after being robbed while dropping off a fare.

Babar Khan (40), a driver with Silver Cabs in Silver Lane, Stamford, was pushed against his Ford Mondeo car and had his £50 night’s takings stolen by two men in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Father-of-four Mr Khan, of Serlby Gardens, Longthorpe, Peterborough, picked up the men and in Stamford and took them to Grantham, where they mugged him in Gonerby Road.

Mr Khan lost his takings and the £40 fare.

He said: “I was so scared that I was going to be killed.

“I didn’t know if one of them had a knife or not.

“I am angry and upset. I have been a taxi driver for 13 years and nothing like this has happened before.

“We do take a lot on trust and in return we get mugged and assaulted.

“I’m scared of working night shifts now.”

Mr Khan said his cab was ordered to pick up the two men from the Periwig, in Red Lion Square, Stamford, before collecting two women from the Pear Tree, in Broad Street.

The women were dropped off first in Saint Augustine Way, Grantham.

In Gonerby Road, Mr Khan said one man got out of the car, claiming he was going to be sick, while the other got out to reach for money in his pocket.

He said: “I got out and said I was waiting to be paid. The second guy pushed me away.

“I thought they are not going to pay, so I walked back to the driver’s side and then realised one of them had grabbed my right arm from behind.

“I was screaming.”

Mr Khan, who injured his arm in a fall four years ago, said he asked them to leave him but was grabbed and pushed onto the car door.

They then took £50 in cash from his pocket.

The men ran off and Mr Khan drove to Grantham police station to report the robbery.

One man was aged 20 to 25, of slim build with short blond scruffy hair, a long-sleeved dark shirt and dark trousers.

The other was of medium build with short, dark scruffy hair, also aged 20 to 25 . He wore a dark shirt and dark trousers, with dark vest on top.
