70 jobs go at Peterborough packaging firm

Peterborough's economy has been dealt another blow following the news that 70 jobs have been axed at a Peterborough-based packaging and promotions firm.

Peterborough's economy has been dealt another blow following the news that 70 jobs have been axed at a Peterborough-based packaging and promotions firm.Empress Promotions which has been established at its site in Holkham Road, Orton Southgate since the 1980s is no longer trading.

The company, which worked to bundle, store and place inserts in various magazines and newspapers, declined to comment about the closure or the job losses.

However a spokesman for Peterborough-based business recovery consultants and licensed insolvency practitioners Elwell Watchorn and Saxton LLP confirmed the job losses.

He said: "We can confirm that about 70 workers have lost their jobs and that Empress Promotions has ceased trading."

It is believed that the company went out of business primarily because two of its major customers pulled out.

The company has not gone into liquidation.

This will not happen until creditors and members pass a resolution at a meeting to be held next Wednesday.

It is believed that one of the partners at Elwell Watchorn and Saxton LLP could be appointed as the liquidator.

Empress Promotions provided a wide range of services for the magazine and newspaper industry which included banding, bundling. collating, inserting, packing on contract, placing on pallets and storage.

The company also had a secure storage capacity of 10,000 square foot in their warehouse next door to their offices.

Chief executive of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce John Bridge said: "We deeply regret the human impact of a company closing.

"It is clear that there are still some businesses which are finding the economic situation very challenging and some will not survive.

"But we must actively work to attract the right businesses to Peterborough to provide job opportunities."

The 70 redundancies will add to the number of jobless people in Peterborough, which increased slightly last month.

Figures were released by the Office For National Statistics last week.

They revealed there were 5,483 people claiming jobseekers allowance in the city in December.

This was up by 15 claimants compared to the previous month.
