Why accept
adverts from the Tories?

Regarding page 18 of The Evening Telegraph issue of March 18, 2010, may I protest that you have taken Lord Ashcroft’s tainted money to pay for the Tory party full page advert. Shame on you. On one hand you preach about doing “the right thing” and on the other you take cash from a disgraced non-tax paying dictator.

Keep on turning the other cheek and take the cash must be your new motto.

Shame on you ET. You have gone way down in my estimation.

John Dean

Orton, Peterborough

EDITOR’S REPLY: I’m afraid you are wrong. We have a legal responsibility to accept any advertisement that meets with Advertising Standards Agency guidelines. In simple terms we have to accept advertisements from political parties if they meet the ASA criteria.

So what part of 'free speech' and 'free press' does Mr Dean not understand. I would not want to live in the sort of country that Mr Dean would like i.e. a country that suppresses opposition parties. The Labour party have abused public funds for 13 years using ever increasing PR advertising budgets to promote their political agenda, something I would want to see cut immediately. I do not know where Mr Dean gets his details on Mr Ashcroft's tax affairs from but as a non dom he will be paying full UK tax on his UK income as required under UK law and it is only from this income that he may make donations to theTories. And even then Mr Ashcoft represents only a small % of Tory income! Personally I think it is a greater disgrace that the ET have printed the nonsense in Mr Dean's letter than a perfectly legal advert.

We have just under four weeks to an election.Of course you are going to get adverts in the press from all Partys and the amounts are paid from each Party's coffers. How is Lord Ashcroft's money tainted and how could anyone possibly know it is his money that paid for the advert. He has done a lot of good for this country and along the way has contributed much of his wealth.

Yep, the last thing we need in England is information on party policy so we can make an informed decision on 6th May.

How could you possibly know it's Ashcroft's money? He's not their only donor I believe? The ET are a private enterprise and need to sell advertising space. If they don't they go out of business. I don' think many private enterprises have the luxury at the moment of turning down business. Just because they have does not mean they have become politicised
