Ward funding could pay for patrols
Would it be possible for the proposed withdrawal of lollipop ladies to be halted with a different approach?
Each of the 24 of the city wards, I think I’m correct in saying, receives an annual grant of £10,000. This gives them a total in disposable income in one year of £240,000, to be spent by the ward councillors, on things within that particular ward. The total amount of money being spent on the lollipop ladies is apparently only £43,000 per year. Could not that money simply be deducted from each of the wards in the city equally as people either live in the affected areas or drive through them?
The cost would be less than £1,800 per ward per year, surely a very small sum to pay for ensuring that the children at least stand a sporting chance of getting them across very busy streets.
