Readers' letters: Praiseworthy pupils 08/09/2008

RE: The Voyager School examination results.

RE: The Voyager School examination results.Your banner headlines, which focus on statistics, conceal the outstanding achievements of pupils and teachers.

I am proud to congratulate some of the Voyager pupils who used to attend Bretton Woods community School.

Ashley Haberman-Lawson gained 12 GCSE passes, eight at grade A; Jake Balkwill gained 11 GCSE passes, A* to C; Sara Tomas gained 10 passes (one A*, two As and six Bs) and Vanessa Pereira, 10 passes, including 4 As – the latter two being new arrival pupils who have rapidly learned English.

Teachers from Bretton Woods and Walton should be praised for their work during the past year.

They have launched their new school and successfully supported some 340 Year 11 pupils whose GSCE programmes were disrupted by the city council's decision to re-organise secondary education in Peterborough through the closure of five schools.

Look out for cub hunters

We have now reached the time of the year when, before the ban on hunting, early season fox cub hunting would commence.

I suspect that in some parts of the country it may be continuing. This is because fox hounds have to be taught to kill foxes.

The Conservatives are determined to make hunting with dogs legal again if ever elected to govern.

If the blood sport is legalised, some members of the hunting fraternity might be purple with rage at not having hounds trained to hunt foxes to exhaustion and kill them.

However, the main point of my letter is to ask people who are out and about, going to work at just before daybreak, and for about two hours afterwards to look out for signs of any hunting taking place.

Tell-tale signs of cub hunting are as follows:

nYoung foxes, the size of large kittens, or small cats being released into an isolated wood in the late evening.

nHorse boxes out before daybreak, or parked near isolated woodland.

nHounds being put into a wood which is surrounded by individuals who drive any frightened cubs back into the wood to be slaughtered.

nYoung dogs being shouted at cursed at, or allegedly sometimes even whipped in an attempt to force them to attack cubs, then praised when they do.

na sound like babies crying as the cubs are attacked.

i would be deeply grateful if those opposed to hunting would be kind enough to carry cameras in their car, and if they see it going on, try to film it at a distance.

They should especially try to film anyone in a red coat, and any contact or chasing of foxes.

Do not put yourself in danger and call the RSPCA, not the police, as soon as possible.
