Letters: MP should have stood up for his constituents 12/06/2008

Recently residents in Netherton pointed out to me that the Conservative MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson had a section set aside for his views in your paper.

Recently residents in Netherton pointed out to me that the Conservative MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson had a section set aside for his views in your paper.Like me, they noted that his whole article concerned the Grange allotments and that he was now saying he did not support the Conservative council's actions to push ahead with the planned housing development.

It is a shame that the MP did not support us when we campaigned to save the allotments as green space.

The MP for Peterborough should have joined me in making representations to two secretaries of state and the Conservative leader of the city council.

The council's proposals were unwelcome and are still not befitting of a city that aspires to have environmental capital status.

The MP could have helped us so much over the last two years and should have stood up for us his constituents.

Will he now back us in calling on the Conservative council to withdraw these plans?

I support petition but who added me to it?

In a recent edition of The Evening Telegraph you ran a story regarding a petition that has been submitted to the Prime Minister regarding the removal of Councillor Gul Nawaz as deputy mayor of this fine city of ours.

I decided to have a look at this petition to see just who had signed it, and low and behold, it seems I had.

So it seems my name is on the petition, but NO I did not at any time sign it.

I agree with the petition and what it states and I think that resignation is the only answer, but whoever is messing about with the democratic rights of the public, such as freedom of speech and the right to protest should, be ashamed of themselves.

I have some educated suspicions but I will leave it up to your readers to work out.

Some people, it seems, will stoop to any depths to have their way and to suppress genuine anger at this affront to public pride in this city.

People forced to take own action

Civil disobedience and taking the law into your own hands because the proper channels have failed to is a worrying trend.

The recent problems in Keeton Road being an example locally. Nationally there has been a recent example of the builder who knocked down his work because the householder would not pay his bill.

These are examples of a failing system of law and order when the correct methods to rectify problems are inadequate and this will escalate if those who should put grievances right do not succeed. The next epidemic will be the bands of vigilantes doing what the police should do.

Few will disagree with the actions of desperate householders taking action when the right steps fail. I say hats off to Mr Cunningham (the road blocker) and Mr Gray (the demolition man) for taking remedial action when all else fails.

Wood it be possible?

I don't know how many people know about the Itter Park project.

Sue Doogan and the team from BBC Cambridgeshire, with local support from residents and the council, did a grand job.

How about Bretton Park and Southey Wood?

In Bourne there is a group of friends who put on events and Southey, I'm told, is remembered for the wrong reasons by many.

Perhaps that's why the gate is locked.

How about it folks, can Peterborough improve things?

Protesters were in the right

RE: The article on May 27 "Activists stage greyhound protest".

I live near the greyhound stadium and I spoke to the protesters and took their leaflets.

I was shocked to learn just how many of these greyhounds they say are bred and disposed of.

I applaud them for what they are doing and wish them great success.

I may even join them on their next protest which I hope will be very soon.
