Letter: Why should over-50s get special treatment? - 30/06/09

Re: The story about the over-50s club being banned from Eye Library.I am an user of Eye library. Why should the over-50s group get hot drinks as a right? No one else is allowed to drink in a library, no matter how responsible they might be.

There's no suggestion that they're not welcome, they just can't have hot drinks. Sounds about right to me.

Libraries are not coffee shops. I don't remember ever being able to have hot drinks in a library before (or cold ones for that matter).

And, in fact, the library is not even banning their hot drinks, they are simply saying they need to move the time of the group to not coincide with the toddlers if they want to continue having hot drinks.

It's much more important that the local nursery has a fun and enjoyable visit to the library, so that the children are introduced to books and reading at an early age, than that the old dears can have their cup of tea.

And no, I don't think it's health and safety gone mad to not have scalding hot cups of tea sitting about when you have 15 children running around the room at the same time. I don't leave scalding hot liquids within reach of my five-year-old, and I only have one to watch, not 15.

The cup washing comment on the website is ridiculous. Grow up people. Just because it's something you want, doesn't mean everyone else has to organise themselves around you.

Go to the library, have your meeting and biscuits, then go somewhere else for a cuppa. Or if you want your cuppa, go at a different time from the toddlers.

Have some respect for other library users – you can have tea and coffee anywhere, but you can't get a library service anywhere, it has to be at a library.
