Letter: What does John Bridge know that we don't? - 08/12/08
I read with interest that John Bridge of Opportunity Peterborough intends to do everything possible to get the Gazeley development built.
I read with interest that John Bridge of Opportunity Peterborough intends to do everything possible to get the Gazeley development built. He has obviously been provided with a lot more information than the residents of Peterborough, as the last I heard there had been no concrete answers from Gazeley about some key issues.
The last I heard the plans was for seven warehouses, which means that each warehouse will require over 700 staff each. Even that leaves 500 associated jobs to bring the total to 5,400 jobs. Surely a modern warehouse development can't be this labour intensive – even if split over three shifts that means over 200 staff for each warehouse.
Also, is Mr Bridge in possession of a breakdown of how many of these jobs will be high, medium or low skilled? What Peterborough needs is employers attracting mid to high skilled workers, not more low skilled workers.
Not even Gazeley has offered an explanation as to how they are going to force this massive workforce to use the new by-pass. The last thing Stanground needs is another 5,000 cars clogging up the roads. With the planned traffic calming on the Whittlesey Road, it will be Coneygree Road that suffers even more than it already does.
Although the shifts are planned to be outside of the usual rush hour, it will just mean the roads will be busier, for longer.
I can only conclude that Mr Bridge has access to information has not yet been made public or confirmed. How else can he be so sure that this development might go ahead? If so, please do tell.
There are many many other issues that Gazeley have avoided answering, so it would be great for Mr Bridges to share the information he has with the rest of us.
