Letter: Underpass flooding should be sorted out - 04/02/10

Re: The flooding at the Holdenfield underpass.

Re: The flooding at the Holdenfield underpass.I am a street leader for the Ravensthorpe estate and the underpass is a direct link to the Bretton centre and its medical surgery.

The flooding never need have happened, I have been onto the council many times and told them what would happen if they did not keep the drains clear and the rubbish all swept up. But as one resident said, it happens every time the weather is poor.

But as usual the council put its head in the sand and ignored advice given and as usual thought they knew best. A lot of elderly people use the underpass, and mums with young children, also with buggies.

Don't you think it's about time the council got a grip and listened to someone who can offer advice?

As a street leader I take my job seriously and do my best for all residents on the estate in trying to make it a place they can be proud of. But I cannot achieve this on my own, the council needs to pull its finger out and get things done as well.

It's only been since 2006, but there has been a big improvement made, as I've been told, when I came here this estate was just like the slums of London. If I don't get the help I require, I will take my complaint to a higher authority, to London if need be.

I am not afraid to contact officialdom, I have dealt with it all my life, with being in the military.

It takes half an hour to walk right round to get to the shops if the underpass is flooded. Elderly people like to be independent and not always rely on people. Also they like the chance to go to the shops and look for themselves. But why should they, and in some cases elderly people cannot cope with all the walking.
