Letter: Triangle traffic lights causing long delays

Traffic around the New England Triangle in Peterborough on 30th January. Photo sent in by Lord Kenneth Montgomery-Moore

This mid to late afternoon (Monday, January 30) I took some photos of exactly what the situation is regarding the New England Triangle Intersection/Junction on Lincoln Road and St Paul’s Road.

The newly installed traffic lights were intended to minimize and stablise and control the traffic flow to a reasonable and functional level.

However, nearly four months after completion of this £500,000 revamp the traffic department appears to have failed to set the correct timing of these lights during rush hour as commuters are returning home from work or collecting their children from the local Fulbridge School.

The tail-back went as far as St Paul’s Road towards the Crown pub at that junction coming in from Bourges Boulevard.

It clearly is unbelievable to be stuck in this, day in and day out as part of your journey to and from work.

Let’s not forget those who were stuck in each side street like Brassey Close, Thistlemoor Road and others going far back to Crown Street itself.

There was also a large amount of traffic which tail-backed down St Pauls Road itself, therefore clogging up each side road down that direction.

I believe that action must be taken as soon as humanly possible to rectify this matter.

Photos are worth a thousand words or more like a thousand complaints.

The sequencing and timing are wrong. You sit at the first red then it changes only to move you to the next red 20m later, with a stationary queue sat through the green light. The other day a bus swung out of the bus lane and used the normal lane as he was facing a red but there was a green on the second lights which we couldn't get to on account of a red on the first set. Madness.

I understand that the new layout is hurting Spire’s business. Shame, they are the last remnants of old England in New England.

Motorists always seem to be in so much of a rush. Why not take the opportunity of time spent queuing to apply your make-up or listen to the latest JLS song on Heart FM. Then you will arrive at your destination looking beautiful and chirpy.

what do you expect when giving the oxymoronic Highways Dept the opportunity to waste money on traffic lights, giving right of way to buses and taxi's and traffic that isnt even there. I have sat there waiting for a green when there is no traffic coming from the other side. A waste of money and they will be back to put it all as it was before - using our money again.!!! When they make these cock-ups it should come out of their wages, then they would be more careful !!!

Pottyborough drivers don't help themselves! Every day I'm in queues where, from many cars back, you can see the lights go green and start moving forward. However, 90% of driver seem to be asleep at the wheel, and only move when the car in front has moved 5m forward, so throughput at the junction is much reduced. Really winds me up.
