Letter: the Olympic torch coming to Peterborough - Please justify this pointless expense
Could I challenge the council, preferably the leader, to justify the expense of £93,000 for faffing about with the Olympic torch which, apart from anything else, looks like an overgrown match, and the resurrected idea of water taxis (weren’t they supposed to be commercially funded?).
In the council’s budget, increased costs are mentioned several times, as is the fact that people are living longer and schools places are under pressure. So, could we have please, a clear statement, without management consultant speak, which usually means ‘I do not have the faintest idea what I am talking about’ as to why thousands of pounds of our money is being spent in this way?
Where will the £93,000 for the overgrown matchstick be spent? Does the city have to pay a fee for the torch to be here? Can we have assurance that the water taxis are not just a vanity project?
These are just some points that need addressing. But mostly, why is money being spent on this sort of thing when so much else is needed?
And don’t even think of mentioning government cuts.
The cuts can’t be that deep if there are thousands of pounds to spend on such things as the torch and taxis.
