Letter: Spring clean cannot come soon enough - 09/02/10

The Friday edition of the Evening Telegraph, (Orton News page) informs readers of the forthcoming (late March) Annual Spring Clean by the city council and involves the removal of dropped litter, food wrappers, plastic and glass bottles and drink cans and graffiti and, finally, fly-tipped material (clothes, furniture, buggies, TVs and electrical equipment).

With all this in mind it seems a good opportunity to highlight certain areas in particular that are causing growing concern to those members of these townships who have the environmental aspect and Green City title in mind. Something that many residents seem to lack or have any concern about!!

Firstly is the 'open ditch' directly by Orton Longueville School layby where months of discarded litter etc. can be readily observed especially by those who have respect of the hedgerows and environment close to school approaches. Again, within the historic Longueville Woods, where a concerned number of residents and friends have spent many hours over the past years attempting to 'clean up' the area. However, since the passing of the main driving force, Mr Sam Bishop, these efforts have been left to one or two members who try and do their bit to keep these woodlands in some sort of respectability!

Unfortunately 'privilege' access has been given for the students to use and have formed footpaths to the rear entrance to their school. Regrettably this has lead to trails of discarded litter etc from the foot/cyclepath from the nearby estates to the school gates. Requests to the Woodland Trust /Orton School for the provision of environmentally friendly litter bins has seemingly fallen on deaf ears! However, the provision of such receptacles by the layby (once the 'open ditch has been cleansed) and by the foot/cycle-paths at the exit points of the paths might greatly assist in reducing the problem? The visits of the Environmental Educational Group seemingly have had little effect in halting the problem!

If a cigarette end can lead to prosecution and a fine it seems somewhat strange when these townships, which boast of E-Cops, Environmental and Street Wardens and Community Police seem to have little 'clout' and it is left to the monthly litter pick by the Orton Impact small group of volunteers to try and show by example the current need for more positive action to be forthcoming from the appropriate authorities and more concern to be shown by residents. Some return of PRIDE of PLACE would not be amiss.

M. Russell,

Long term Orton resident
