Letter: Peterborough Match Fund - Something really special for groups in need of cash

With all the doom and gloom in the air at the moment, Mike Greene (“Secret millionaire’s challenge to help local charities”, ET January 25) has shown exceptional verve and determination by supporting an innovative way of encouraging local groups to build new sources of income, and incentivising donors to be generous.

Not content with his Secret Millionaire appearance on Channel 4, Mike has pledged to raise a Peterborough Match Fund pot, allowing dozens of local causes to have any online donations they receive through www.localgiving.com, doubled.

It is exactly this kind of local, grassroots response that can bring a community together in times of hardship. Having both lived and worked in Peterborough for a number of years, and as trustees of the local Community Foundation, we are heartened by local people such as Mike, who recognise the need to give back to their community.

We believe that the Peterborough Match Fund has the potential to turn into something really special for the many voluntary and community groups working hard here in Peterborough.

It is for this reason that we urge as many Peterborough companies and residents as possible to get involved and support the Peterborough Match Fund, either by donating to one of local groups on www.localgiving.com when the match is live on 24 April, or by helping a local charitable group they know to register on the localgiving site.
