Letter: Peterborough Garden Park plans - Provision for pedestrians
I was interested to read about the proposed extension to the Peterborough Garden Park, which is being supported by the Parnwell Residents Association.
When the planning application is submitted to Peterborough City Council, I expect to see a more adequate provision for pedestrians wishing to visit the Garden Park than that pertaining at the present time.
The only safe way to visit is by vehicle, and there are plenty of car parking spaces available. However, if you have to use public transport, the bus stop is on the opposite side of the busy road from the entrance to the Garden Park and, once inside the park, there is no footway to the shopping area.
How is it possible for planning permissions to be given to such prestigious shopping outlets which penalise pedestrians who would dearly love to visit them?
Regretfully, the same situation applies to the Dobbies Garden Centre in Hampton. Members of our Townswomen’s Guild wanted to visit and we had to hire a taxi for eight people so that they could make the journey safely.
I think the city council planning department is missing a trick here in not looking more thoroughly into the implications of travelling to these new out-of-town shopping areas for all members of the population, whether car owners or pedestrians.

Friday, February 24, 2012 at 03:36 PMIt's difficult to find somewhere to park your bicycle at a garden centre. If there is no cycle parking I lock my bike to the trollies just to make a point.

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:59 AMThe pedestrian access for Dobbies actively discourages visitors without transport which is surprising given that the retailer claims to be such an eco champion. Perhaps this is nothing more than a PR campaign by it's owner, Tesco? To clarify the pedestrian route, simply cross Phorpres Way from the pavement bordering Cygnet Park.
