Letter: MP Jackson is so out of touch on ‘difference between an MP and a councillor’ issue

In response to MP Stewart Jackson’s letter ‘The difference between an MP and a councillor’ (February 1), I would like to point out to Mr Jackson that Westminster and his Conservative-led Government has cut the amount of money that Peterborough council will get this year.

Mr Jackson has broken too many promises to be trusted. at the last election, he promised that the Conservatives would freeze council tax for two years, and published a statement that this would save the average family £200 and splashed this promise all over his “in touch” newsletter, which was funded at taxpayers’ expense.

More like £20, Mr Jackson. Even with two or three mansions, a family would not save £200. This year in Peterborough, the Conservative councillors are planning a 2.95 per cent council tax hike, and they are throwing away a grant of £1.5 million to freeze council tax. I do not know what the council tax is on his other home in London, or why he is so out of touch with what the average family actually has to live on.

I am hacked off with Conservative lies and their proposed hike in council tax which they will use to pay for vanity projects and their outrageous allowances and expenses. What about the two residential homes that are closing to fund these?

At the council scrutiny meeting, it was unclear as to whether these homes would remain open over the next few months or not. I wonder if the old people in them feel the council is on their side?

Conservatives also have plans for a 25 per cent hike in council tax for single pensioners by scrapping the single person’s discount. We need some fresh faces in politics that are there to serve the people of Peterborough with integrity and not in it for what they can get for themselves.
