Letter: Many people can’t afford 50p a day for breakfast for their children
I read with interest our MP Stewart Jackson’s column on Friday.
I was surprised, but not totally shocked that he does not know, and does not believe, that some parents cannot afford 50p for breakfast each day for their children. If you have more than one child it mounts up.
Peterborough is a low pay area and many parents here struggle in poverty. They do not drink or smoke but on minimum wages everything is a struggle and 50p a day matters a lot.
Time also matters. Some start work before their children leave for school and most are still working when the children get home. For many life is tough. That includes the children.
Jobs are almost impossible for many to get, due to varied circumstances. Life is also tough on benefits.
There are positive steps that the education system can take to improve children’s job prospects, nutrition and education, and I hope that when we get a Labour controlled council we can help bring this about.
