Letter: Don’t forget winter wildlife
I took a walk along the river on Wednesday for the first time since it snowed on Saturday, and found that a large proportion of the river was frozen over, and the many swans and other wildlife there were obviously in great distress.
The path along the river from the bridge in town up to the rowing lake is fairly clear of snow now, so could I urge anyone who can to take a walk along there and take some food to help them through this difficult time. Many thanks.

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 08:32 AMSadly, huge numbers of wildfowl die when food is scarce. and mostly it is caused by the public feeding bread throughout the year for their own amusement. Over the years adult birds have lost the natural skills to forage and have not taught younger birds how to live naturally. Go to Ferry Meadows in the summer for example and you will see huge flocks gather around people with bags and bags of bread. Young birds learn only how to eat bread. That causes disease and malformities in them. In the winter they don't know how to forage, the bread disappears and the birds die. If you want to offer supplements in winter make sure it is natural seeds and grain - and don't feed the birds in the summer.
