Letter: Opportunity to fight diseases 19/11/08

I REFER to a recent letter in The ET from Toni Vercelli, of Animal Aid, which displays either a misunderstanding of the available science, or a further attempt to mislead the public. The opening of the Oxford laboratory should be celebrated as an opportunity to further our understanding of a range of terrible conditions which afflict our society.

The letter to which I refer is sprinkled with statements posing as the truth, with one frequently cited and very specific reference to the data which could support the anti-vivisection point of view.

The truth is that there does exist a plethora of published data, much of this relating to successful and effective treatments, which demonstrate how work involving animals really has contributed to improvements in human health and welfare.

All of us would rather that research with animals is indeed unnecessary and, one day, this might well be the case.

However, until that time, I think the majority of us do accept the necessity of some research, and I, for one, would like to see the efforts and funds of those opposing animal research directed not to unhelpful propaganda, but rather into the drive to find true and effective alternatives.
