Letter: Newspaper should not promote the greyhound track - 07/11/08

I am writing to you in response to an article in your newspaper Amazing ET Greyhounds offer extended (ET, October 31), which could only be described as a free advertisement for the Peterborough greyhound racetrack.

I am writing to you in response to an article in your newspaper Amazing ET Greyhounds offer extended (ET, October 31), which could only be described as a free advertisement for the Peterborough greyhound racetrack.I am surprised that the paper would want to associate itself with a sport which is under continued scrutiny following the report by the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW) published in 2007 which highlighted the welfare issues associated with the sport.

The self regulated greyhound racing industry produces thousands of surplus and retired dogs every year.

Many of these dogs are destroyed inhumanely or abandoned. In addition, dogs often receive fatal injuries as a result of the dangerous courses they have to run or being made to run while still suffering from previous injuries.

At the Peterborough stadium two dogs have recently died while on the track and at least a further three were put down as a result of racing injuries.

The League Against Cruel Sports believes that greyhound racing is in urgent need of reform through statutory legislation and we campaign to ensure that the Government will include the recommendations made by APGAW.

It is only when an independent body, inclusive of animal welfare groups is set up, that welfare can come before profit.

It is the hope of the League that now these concerns have been highlighted to you, free advertisement and endorsement from your paper for the Peterborough greyhound racing stadium shall no longer continue.
