Letter: High cost is why hotel is not used enough - 30/06/09

Having read on The ET letters page about John Knowles' regular weekly visits to meet friends at the Great Northern Hotel, I wonder who pays the bills? We took friends there to eat because they and we had trains to catch within 50 minutes of each other one lunchtime.

They were on their way home to Birmingham after a weekend visit to us, and we had an urgent last-minute appointment in London.

The Great Northern Hotel seemed the ideal place to eat.

I was shocked at the menu prices and feared, as I'd made the booking and our friends has offered to pay, that I had really made a bad choice, as I hadn't thought about the cost.

But they still insisted on paying, even though none of us are in the least bit wealthy.

I wasn't surprised that ours, and one other table, were the only ones occupied that day.

Yes, John Knowles, it's good what you say, "use it or lose it", but who can afford the prices of some of these establishments?

I did once enquire at the Great Northern Hotel about the cost of holding a party there, and I was amazed at the difference in the costing to many other hotels in the area I also contacted.

Of course, I had to refuse quite graciously, as the person I was dealing with was very helpful and charming.

I too, think the Great Northern Hotel should be a listed building, and if Peterborough's MP, Stewart Jackson, can make a further try to make it so, then I think he should be supported, not criticised.
