Letter: Battle of Britain memories - 05/05/09

IN 2010, the nation will celebrate one of the most iconic moments in modern history – the Battle of Britain.

IN 2010, the nation will celebrate one of the most iconic moments in modern history – the Battle of Britain. In the summer of 1940, Britain stood completely alone. Had the brave aircrews of the RAF lost the battle, the world might still be a very different place today.

Britain would have been occupied, there would have been no D-Day, and, perhaps more significantly, the Nazis would have been free to develop the first atomic bomb.

They might still have been masters of Europe to this day. Seventy years on, we tend to forget how important a debt we owe to the aircrew of the RAF and the foreign nationals who came to help, who Winston Churchill called "The Few".

A best-selling author and film-maker is currently working on a landmark and definitive project to celebrate this very important anniversary.

He would like to hear from anybody who had a personal involvement with the Battle of Britain.

You may have been a pilot, ground crew member or could have worked on an airfield or in a sector station. You may have been involved with the RDF, the Observer Corps, searchlights, ack-ack guns or barrage balloons. Or you may have worked in a factory making Spitfires or Hurricanes or worked for the Red Cross and served airmen tea and sandwiches.

Whatever your involvement, if you can help in any way, write to:
