Greyhound racing is a cruel sport

I am writing in response to your article and beautiful photo, “Search for ‘angels’ to adopt dogs”, December 20, 2011.

Kudos to Sharon Saberton and to all at Brambleberry Greyhounds for opening their hearts to handsome Blackjack, Texas and Whiskey. Hopefully, these deserving greyhounds will find their new forever home soon.

Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane. The greyhounds are considered short-term investments, valued only as long as they generate a profit for their owners. While racing, greyhounds suffer and die from injuries such as broken limbs, broken necks, paralysis and cardiac arrest. Their post-racing fate falls to volunteer adoption groups such as the Retired Greyhound Trust. Despite that, according to the RSPCA, United Kingdom greyhounds that are injured or are not fast enough disappear at the rate of 20 per day.

I have adopted beloved ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, including senior greys that became unexpectedly homeless when their adopters passed away. I am a board member of GREY2K USA, a national non-profit organization that works to end the cruelty of dog racing.
