Gentle greyhounds need our help
As a supporter of Action For Greyhounds, an international greyhound protection organisation, I was pleased to read, “Pamper the pooch in aid of charity” (ET August 10).
Many greyhound rescue kennels and their helpers work tirelessly to take in and re-home ex-racing greyhounds.
Sadly, it is estimated that more than 15,000 greyhounds disappear, presumed killed, every year.
Injury rates are extremely high due to the fast straights leading into tight bends where dogs knock into one another and “pile up”.
Once injured they generally become useless to their owners/trainers and need to be “got rid of” to make space for another dog.
Any greyhound who gets kennel space in Brambleberry Greyhounds Rescue is a lucky greyhound.
These gentle dogs need our support and protection and so I hope that this charity event is really well supported.

Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 03:19 PMThis sends out totally mixed messages and I would suggest supporters of action for greyhounds should look into these types of events a little closer before commentating in local newspapers. There are hundreds of greyhound rescues that need supporting that are NOT run by Greyhound breeders and trainers. This event is raising funds for rescue greyhounds yes and of course the greyhounds at Brambleberry need caring for, but at the same time the owner of Brambleberry is adding constantly to the problem by breeding more greyhounds!

Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:16 PMMy parents have had 2 rescue greyhounds in the past. They were both quiet, gentle dogs. Believ it or not they are lazy too. for anyone wanting a companion but not wanting a skitty dog that run around under your fett all day then a greyhound is for you.
