ET Comment: Samuel is proving to be a reel talent - 02/07/09
THERE nothing like aiming for the top, but wannabe Hollywood movie maker Samuel Dovaston has certainly got his work cut out.
THERE nothing like aiming for the top, but wannabe Hollywood movie maker Samuel Dovaston has certainly got his work cut out.The 21-year-old, who has already won a film-making award for his first venture – a 10-minute film called Barren – has set his sights high.
He fancies following in the footsteps of his hero Steven Spielberg, the man behind a string of blockbusters such as Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park and Schindler's List.
He has certainly got a lot to live up to, and we wish him well and look forward to seeing his name in lights in years to come.
Money no excuse for animal cruelty
THE recession has played a large part, it would appear, in the way people struggling to pay the bills treat their animals.
When times are hard and something has to give, there is evidence that a growing number of people are abandoning animals or simply handing them over to the RSPCA and similar organisations.
In other instances visits to see a vet with a sick or injured creature are falling by the wayside.
One such case is featured on Page 2 today when a couple's pet dog incredibly lay lame for four weeks, untreated, after suffering multiple fractures to one of its legs.
The reason: they couldn't afford a vet's bill. The outcome: the creature needed a leg amputating.
It is a sad indication of how we as a nation of supposed animal lovers see priorities change where money is involved.
Some people do get attached to their pets to the point where they can't give them up despite the health consequences involved. It is up to the courts to make them take their responsibilities seriously.
