ET Comment: So much to thank our volunteers for - 27/07/09
IT was always going to prove an emotionally charged occasion given what has been happening to our service men and women recently in Afghanistan – so it was no surprise to see hundreds of members of the public applauding the city's volunteers.
IT was always going to prove an emotionally charged occasion given what has been happening to our service men and women recently in Afghanistan – so it was no surprise to see hundreds of members of the public applauding the city's volunteers.Around 150 personnel from the 158 (Royal Anglian) Transport Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps (Volunteers) based in London Road, Fletton, exercised their right to march through the city centre at a special parade. Since 2001 when they were granted Freedom of the City, it has been their right to march with bayonets fixed and flags flying and they looked like they enjoyed every minute of it as they strode past the town hall to the beat of the Band of The Royal Anglian Regiment.
The Mayor of Peterborough Councillor Irene Walsh inspected the parade and took the salute – something she has described as a great honour.
Occasionally the volunteers are dismissed by some as not "real soldiers" but many have seen the reality of action in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as other conflicts.
And for that we should all feel honoured.
