ET Comment: Do not panic over swine flu arriving - 30/06/09

THE news that three people in Peterborough have tested positive for swine flu will probably come as no surprise to many.

THE news that three people in Peterborough have tested positive for swine flu will probably come as no surprise to many. After all, it is just a few day since health experts admitted that with a national peak in cases expected within weeks, Peterborough, while unaffected so far, was unlikely to remain that way.

But it is important people do not panic. While the number of cases in the UK stands at almost 6,000, just three people have died, and those all had underlying health problems.

Simply following the advice being put out by the city's primary care trust will certainly help, as it believes it has the plans in place – and the stockpile of drugs – to cope.

As Dr Richard Spiers says today: "Generally, it is easy to contain these things. It's when people do not keep to hygiene rules when there could be an issue. People really shouldn't worry."

That might be easier said than done in the real world. Reading the advice on Page 5 today might help.

Restaurant attack is terrifying crime

THE firebombing of a city restaurant was clearly a terrifying ordeal for owner Manuel Cascalheira and his wife Natasja.

So it is understandable to hear that after fighting the flames – and in the words of a firefighter being lucky to escape with their lives – they feel unable to go back.

It is a tragedy that a couple should be forced out of business by arsonists. It is equally as important that whoever is responsible is swiftly brought to justice.

Anyone capable of throwing a lighted petrol bomb through the door of a restaurant, knowing people are inside and could quite easily be killed, is a danger to the people of Peterborough and needs to be taken off the streets.

Next time the consequences could be far more devastating.
