ET Comment: Community needs to look out for graffiti vandals - 18/09/07

IT must be really galling for people who gave up their time to clean up and repaint facilities at Parnwell Centre in Peterborough, to see their good work spoiled.

IT must be really galling for people who gave up their time to clean up and repaint facilities at Parnwell Centre in Peterborough, to see their good work spoiled. In a great example of public spirited commitment, volunteers from the nearby Peterborough Community Church got stuck in, clearing up litter and graffiti, and repainting wooden bridges, arches and fencing.

The centre, particularly around the children's play area and the park where people can enjoy a seat and a chat, looked bright, fresh and cared-for afterwards.

Now the hooligans have struck again and the new paintwork is again covered in graffiti scrawls.

It's shameful. But, we are pleased to see that the people determined to make life in the area better are not allowing this set back to deter them from their efforts, and an environment day on Saturday will see volunteers hard at work again.

However, the problem of vandalism can only be tackled with the help of the community. People who care about Parnwell need to give any information they might have on the culprits to local police officers, so as they can be dealt with. It would also help if parents told their children that graffiti spoils the area.

Be proud to help those less fortunate

CHILDREN at the city's Thorpe Primary School should take pride in their efforts to help less-fortunate youngsters in the Ukraine.

Fund-raising projects, as school staff found out on a visit, are improving life for poverty-stricken children who literally have nothing.

Be alert for creepy crawlie invasion

THE bad news for those who hate creepy crawlies is that an invasion of daddy longlegs could be imminent. The good news is they only live for a couple of days before legging it.
