Displaced children need your help 13/11/08
I AM writing on behalf of the children affected by the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ask for support.
I AM writing on behalf of the children affected by the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ask for support. As people will have read, the situation there has intensified. Increased fighting in North Kivu has forced more than 100,000 people, including children, to flee their homes.
Unicef has already supplied blankets and plastic sheeting, but we urgently need to raise more funds to protect children.
One of the UNICEF team in Congo, Jaya Murphy, said of the distribution point in the camps: "It's a desperate picture. We have organised enough medical supplies to help 24,000 people over the next week, and are trying to maintain clean water supplies. Thousands of children are relying on us."
We would be extremely grateful if readers could either organise a colllection in their workplace, or an event, in support of this emergency appeal – 33 could buy 3,000 water purification tablets, each treating 200 litres of water and 120 could provide 20 large reinforced plastic protective sheets to give children temporary shelter.
An emergency fund-raising pack can be downloaded from www.unicef.org.uk/emergency fundraising or call 0844 801 2414.
Thank you in advance for your support.
