Centre needs some TLC in these challenging times

“What’s ‘Next’ for Bretton Centre following shop closure? (ET January 27 ) Retailer shuts up shop for new site.”

It was with concern that I read about the proposed closure of the Next store in the Bretton Centre. I fully agree that the Bretton Centre has evolved into a vibrant retail centre in recent years following several years of steady decline in the late ’80s/early ’90s.

No surprise, therefore, that major retailers such as Next are being drawn to the new high profile prestigious Brotherhood Retail Park development. What is of particular concern is the potential impact that the closure might have on the Bretton Centre as a well established trading hub outside the city centre.

The centre already shows sign of neglect. Visitors cannot now fail to note that large areas of the centre’s trademark white cladding are extensively covered with unsightly green mildew.

Hopefully the cladding is not already so damaged and stained that it cannot be easily cleaned and restored to its original pristine state?

The Bretton Centre’s infrastructure remains intact but in need of some timely tender loving care if it is to retain its attractiveness to new investors/businesses in these challenging times – a relatively small short term investment for long term gain?

Once it's sat empty for 3 months, the LL will take the roof off to avoid business rates.

Perhaps Mr Tokely you should be taking your questions to the City Councillors elected to represent Bretton - What efforts on behalf of the community who elected them are they making to loby the City Council to promote Bretton Centre to prospective clients to fill the empty units and other buildings there.

Also the long empty EMAP offices above the banks, they will never be filled again. Such a shame...
