ET Comment: Cameras could put brakes on speeders - 14/10/08

SPEEDING drivers are a menace in some parts of Peterborough, and residents have good reason to fear for the safety of pedestrians.

SPEEDING drivers are a menace in some parts of Peterborough, and residents have good reason to fear for the safety of pedestrians.Sadly, there are always drivers who will ignore all traffic calming measures if they can, and shrug off the necessity for 30mph limits on roads close to houses and schools.

The only thing the reckless motorist fears is a speed camera. That's why city police – who do not have the manpower to set up speed traps in every blackspot – are looking for volunteers in Stanground to use hand-held cameras.

It may not be popular with some, but the Speedwatch campaign could make a difference on roads that are used like a racetrack. At the very least, residents will be able to make a case for tougher action if they have proof that drivers are regularly flouting speed limits, then police can decide if it is a priority.

We know that the basic idea of the public co-operating with the police works well in Neighbourhood Watch, so this could be an interesting extension of that partnership, with the proviso that the residents who are trained to use the cameras do so responsibly.

Community groups in other areas will doubtless be watching results of the Stanground scheme with interest.

It's a big break for young actor Corey

IT is nice to see budding 11-year-old actor Corey Bearman-Worthington get a break, doing voiceovers for the Disney TV channel. Corey deserves it for overcoming his problems with cystic fibrosis to achieve his dream.
