Strong winds were recorded last night in the city, and they are set to increase through the day.

Trevor Robbins-Pratt, from Peterborough Weather Watch said: “The strongest gusts I have recorded so far is 25mph, but I know the Wittering weather station has had 40mph.

“I am expecting it to reach 50mph - possibly up to 60mph - in the exposed areas, and up to 45mph in the city centre this afternoon. These are very strong gusts, and it is possible they will bring down trees, given the sodden ground and wet weather we have had.

“The storm will move north by midnight, and will calm down a bit. There will be a few days where the weather is a bit benign and non descript, with sunshine and showers, but nowhere near as breezy.

“It could pick up again on Friday though, although it is a bit early to say.”
