Firefighters from Wisbech and Long Sutton battled against a fire which broke out in a terraced bungalow in Colville Road last night (Thursday, February 11).

The householder, a man, woke up to find his living room alight and raised the alarm after escaping from his home, which has been gutted.

Another neighbour rescued a man, who lived in an adjacent property but had difficulty leaving, amid fears the fire would spread.

Ambulance crews took two people to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn, to be treated for minor smoke inhalation. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Firefighters are now investigating the cause of the blaze.

Station Commander Ady Slack said: “It is believed the fire started in the main living room of the property where the occupant was asleep. He woke up when the fire was already well established and was very lucky to get out of the property.

“Thankfully, concerned neighbours called 999 to alert the fire service of the smoke, enabling our crews to arrive and prevent the fire from spreading to any of the adjacent bungalows.

“The bungalow in which the fire started has been 100 per cent affected by fire, which also has caused damage to the roof.”

Two crews from Wisbech and a crew from Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, were called to a blaze just before 9.30pm.

Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels, jets and hydrants to extinguish the fire by 11.15pm.

Crews returned to their stations by 12.35am.
