Kind-hearted children from the Husaini Islamic Centre, in Burton Street, Peterborough, have raised more than 500 in two weeks. They presented 300 to the maternity unit and 270 to the Special Care Baby Unit at Peterborough District Hospital (PDH). This will be used to buy much-needed equipment, including a sonic aid to monitor heart rates.

Sukaina Manji said: "The children in our community were born at PDH, so it is only right that they help by donating to the hospital."

The fund-raising was held during the 10-day mourning for Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, killed 1,400 years ago.
