On Sunday, March 20 and Monday, March 21, the hospital in Bretton saw “unprecedented demand” at the Emergency Department with a 40 per cent rise in patients turning up.

Neil Doverty, chief operating officer, said: “Despite seeing increasing numbers within the Emergency Department, staff coped exceptionally well under an immense amount of pressure.

“We were able to implement support mechanisms to ensure that we could cope with an expected increase over the holiday season.”

A spokeswoman added: “Our emergency and ward teams managed the flow of patients well, despite being extremely busy, and very few patients were waiting for a bed to become free.”
