Advice from health boss on implants
News from The Peterborough Evening Telegraph, www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk
HEALTH bosses in Peterborough have provided reassurance to women worried about breast implants.
Silicone implants supplied by French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PiP) sparked a world health scare, prompting NHS Peterborough to issue guidance to city women who might have had the surgery.
Dr Andy Liggins, NHS Peterborough director of public health, said: “We recognise that this is a worrying time for women who have had PiP implants and understand their concerns.
“We are following national guidance and advice on the long term management of this issue. There is no link to cancer and there is no clear evidence of an increased risk of harm compared to other brands of breast implants.
“We would advise concerned women with PiP implants in Peterborough to speak to their NHS specialist or GP if the surgery was done by the NHS, and those who had them done privately should speak to their clinic to agree on appropriate action.”
PiP closed in 2010 when it was revealed the company was using industrial grade silicone instead of medical. For details visit www.nhs.uk/implants
