The council’s highways provider Skanska took delivery of five new gritters over the winter and now two have been named as a lasting tribute to the record-breaking councillor and his wife.

Charles Swift had been a councillor from 1954 before he stood down at the recent local elections.

The gritters named after the councillor and his wife are the biggest in the fleet and are predominately used on the parkway system.

Councillor Peter Hiller, cabinet member for growth, planning, housing and economic development, said: “Later in the year, these gritters will be out again keeping our parkway system safe for road users. The same parkway system that Charles helped to build when he led this city.

“I think everything has already been said about Charles’ unrivalled contribution to the city, and this is just another way to pay tribute to his years of service.

“It’s also a great example of the benefits of working alongside Skanska who provide these new, modern gritters as part of the Peterborough Highways Services contract.”
