Women of Achievement: Delya Tebbs

Women have a wide and varied range of skills, we all know that – but how good is it to be able to relax a hamster?

Women have a wide and varied range of skills, we all know that – but how good is it to be able to relax a hamster?Delya Tebbs can do all this and more, having trained in the fine art of reiki eight years ago, and become a master of the therapy four years ago.

There is a great pressure in our society to be dynamic, forceful, in your face and on the go around the clock.

But there are some people who aren't like that. There are some people who are like a breath of fresh air in a polluted, tired world.

And Delya is one of those people. She is 61, and in her quiet, gentle way, uses reiki to help people to unwind and de-stress in her home a sunny little corner of Nassington, near Peterborough.

It was a skill she came to late in life, after being interested in complementary therapies when she was younger and training as a beauty specialist.

She said: "I went on a weekend retreat, and did lots of things, such as T'ai Chi and yoga, and reiki as well. I really enjoyed it and found it very calming, and I decided it was something I would like to learn."

Reiki is hard to describe, but basically a client lies on a couch in a very relaxing, room in Delya's cottage, while music plays in the background. She then spends an hour holding her hands over your body. The idea is (I think) that good vibes from Delya are passed on to her client.

"Reiki works well with animals," said Delya. "Because they aren't cynical. You can calm horses down with it, cats, dogs, even a little hamster in your hand. Instead of questioning everything they just relax and think 'This is nice'."
