ORTHOPAEDIC surgeon Andrew Hennessy finished the Great Eastern Run in his best time for three years – having arrived at the start line just half an hour after finishing surgery.Mr Hennessy, who runs for Wells City Harriers, had been on call for Peterborough District and Edith Cavell hospitals throughout the night on what turned out to be a busy shift.

Despite being called out on three occasions during the night, Mr Hennessy still remarkably managed to finish sixth in the main race.

Mr Hennessy has put his extraordinary effort down to a rush of adrenaline caused by a lack of rest the night before the big race.

He said: "We work on call for 24 hours, and my day to do it was Saturday. I worked all day, and we were operating until we finished at 11pm, and then I had a bit of food and got some sleep."

"During the night we are on an ongoing basis and I got called at midnight, 3am and 6am. Luckily there wasn't a huge amount to do so I got some rest.

"I finished the round at 10.30am with just enough time to get my running kit on and run to the course."
