Last night (Wednesday) alented skaters dressed in an array of colourful costumes took to the ice in Peterborough to perform Spirit - a creative fusion of fire, air, earth and water.

The performance came after a charity had been presented with about 1,500 at the touring ice skating show's gala performance last night.

A cheque for the money was donated to Stamford-based Anna's Hope, which helps children with brain tumours, by Holiday on Ice at the Exec Peterborough, East of England Showground.

Artistic director of the Spirit show Robin Cousins, who is head of the judging panel on ITV's Dancing on Ice, said he was pleased Holiday on Ice is supporting the charity.

He said a fraction of ticket sales from the gala night went towards the charity and added: "Holiday on Ice has been involved with this charity before.

"I am always partial to supporting children's charities and it makes this one extra special as it is a locally-based cause."

Carole Hughes and her husband, Rob, of Pilsgate, Stamford, set-up the charity in memory of their daughter Anna, who lost her battle against a brain tumour aged just three in May 2006.

Families of deployed troops from RAF camps in the area including Wittering and Anna's Hope children, who are suffering with brain tumours, were invited along to the first show in Peterborough.

Holiday on Ice spokesman Barbara Spiller said: "We asked children in the Eastern area with brain tumours and their families, as well as families who have someone deployed overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq to come along along as a treat."

Organisers say tickets are still available for the show, running in Peterborough and which offers cultural extravaganza of inspirational ice skating, combining the natural beauty of the four elements wth global traditions and modern rhythms.
