Hundreds of pupils from more than 50 schools are staging their own version of the Great British Menu in a bid to be crowned champions when it comes to creating a traditional meal. This year's East of England Agricultural Society Schools Food Challenge has seen a record breaking number of entries from schools across Peterborough and as far and wide as Suffolk and Hertfordshire.

In a similar style to the popular prime-time show on BBC2, teams of five pupils have 45 minutes to create a perfect five-course menu of food for a British family meal.

A total of 58 teams of Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils will be flocking to the East of England Showground for two months of preliminary rounds, before eight finalists are selected for the grand final in June.

Among those taking part are two teams from The Deepings School, in Deeping St James, near Market Deeping four teams from Peterborough High School, in Thorpe Road, and a team from The Voyager School, in Walton, Peterborough.

The competition, which is run in conjunction with the Prince's Trust and the Academy of Culinary Arts, will see the finalists judged on not only their culinary skills, but also their ability to provide the audience with running commentary throughout their demonstration.

Managing director of the showground Alan Webb said: "This is the 14th year of the competition and the standard of cooking has consistently impressed the judges over the years.

"We have a number of schools entering for the first time this year and we are expecting these young people to produce some excellent food."

The team awarded the highest marks from all aspects of the challenge will be presented with the prestigious Schools Food Challenge Trophy together with a cheque for 500.
