Hundreds of people are expected to take to the streets of Peterborough city centre this weekend for a mass "lie down" as part of the latest craze sweeping the nation. But what is The Laying Down Game?ET reporter Nick Reinis spoke to the people behind the event to find out more:

Laying down – it is a simple task that all of us do at some point every point, usually when taking a rest from the pressures of everyday life to relax and unwind - see photo gallery below of lying down in Peterborough.

But thanks to ever increasingly popular social networking websites, lying down will never be the same again as it is the latest normal activity to become an Internet phenomenon.

Although a relatively new, the Laying Down Game or originally 'The Lying Down Game' – often described as "Parkour for those who can't be bothered" – was first founded a few years ago when Facebook began.

Since then it has taken to all corners of the world – and led to its original masterminders, Gary Clarkson and Christian Langdon from Somerset, to file a copyright for the game.

How to take part

There are two main aims to the Laying Down Game – to take pictures in as public a location as possible and to feature as many people as you can.

To take part, you need to lie down on the ground in the same position as if you are standing up.

So, you have the palms of your hands flat against your side and put the tips of your toes pointing at the ground.

You then upload your pictures for all of your friends to see, and the "winners" are the people who find the most outrageous spot to play the game.

And to prove Peterborough is not missing out on the fun-filled fad, a group of people have organised amass lie-down which is set to take place this Saturday, outside the town hall, in Bridge Street.

It has been set up by two rival laying down factions in the city , who have more than 600 members between them, showcasing more than 400 pictures of people playing the game in weird and wonderful places.

From the steps of Peterborough Cathedral, to laying down on top of street signs located across the city, the group's members have proved they have a strong imagination.

Creator of The Laying Down Game – Peterborough Chapter, Ian Hicks (23), a contract administrator at a company in Orton Southgate, was determined to get the city involved.

"I heard about it on the Internet and the news and thought it would be good to do in Peterborough. I think it's just something different, something crazy ," said Ian, of South- fields Avenue, Stanground. Ian has been joined by 19-year-old Jamie Jordan, who created the separate group Down Force, and the pair hope to see hundreds of people in the city on Saturday.

"What we want to have is a huge group of friends to all get together and lie down together . It's just in Peterborough at the moment, but we're hoping to go to other places.

"It's a new craze and all people join in with the latest crazes," said Jamie, from Werrington.

The mass laying down game is due to take place for people of all ages on Saturday, from 1pm, outside the town hall, in Bridge Street, Peterborough.
