Support the war on food waste

RESIDENTS across Hampton are being encouraged to help save money and the environment today.

RESIDENTS across Hampton are being encouraged to help save money and the environment today.Councils in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership are running a number of events to help residents reduce food waste, save money and help the environment. Today the partnership is visiting Hampton.

The event will take place at the Tump, in Hampton, between 3pm and 5pm.

At the event, residents will be able to pick up advice from council officers, as well as useful items to make their homes greener.

The event is part of the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign, and is part of a number of events taking place across the county over the week.

Food waste is a major problem with 6.7 million tonnes being thrown away from UK homes each year – a third of the food we buy.

Along with being a waste of money and natural resources, food ending up in landfill also produces greenhouse gasses, associated with global warming.

Peterborough City Council is also attempting to reduce the amount of household waste – including food – thrown away by residents every year as part of the city’s bid to become Britain’s environment capital.

Helen Taylor, from the Waste Partnership, said: “At a time when every penny counts, the Love Food Hate Waste campaign has really captured people's imaginations. About two million households in the UK are making savings of 164 a year each by eating more of the food they would previously have thrown away.

“We hope residents will join us at our local events to find out how to enjoy more of their food and waste less of it.”

The Waste Partnership will be running other Love Food Hate Waste events throughout the summer.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership is a partnership between Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, Fenland District Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, Peterborough City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.
