September 1 saw the emotional return of RAF heroes to Wittering, near Peterborough, after an arduous seven months in Afghanistan. The 3 Squadron RAF Regiment were reunited with their families and friends after the plane touched down on the Wittering runway.

But September was a black month for a number of city businesses which announced a raft of job cuts.

Up to 50 jobs were announced as to be axed by leading Peterborough machine manufacturer Baker Perkins, in Manor Drive.

Workers were told that the firm needed to cut 50 jobs from its manufacturing arm to remain competitive in the current tough economic climate.

Meanwhile, luxury boat builder Fairline Boats, which has factories in Oundle and Corby, announced plans to axe 90 jobs.

SEPTEMBER was a busy month for Peterborough this year, but none more so than on the city's roads.

Roadworks across the city brought many areas to a standstill, leaving motorists struggling to make their in and around the city.

Particular problems were caused by improvements to the Boongate roundabout, at the junction of the A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway and Fletton Parkway.

The works took place from the middle of September through to the end of the month and into October, including lengthy delays caused by engineering on the Nene Parkway.

Council cabinet member for the environment Wayne Fitzgerald said: "No one likes roadworks, myself included, but they are a necessary fact of life."

September was the first time we saw X Factor finalist JLS – featuring city star Aston Merrygold – take to the live stage.

Having successfully negotiated the auditions and boot camp stages, the act made it through their first live show unscathed, earning rave reviews in the process.

The popular act then went on to reach the grand final in December, with a number of highs and lows in between.
