STAFF and pupils at Sawtry Community College are celebrating after coming third place in the Peterborough Dragon Boat Race. The 16-strong team took part in the fun, games and entertainment at Central Park in Peterborough last month, which saw more than 500 competitiors put in an oar-some effort to ensure the much-anticipated event got off to a roaring start.

Thousands of people lined the Embankment and basked in the glorious sunshine as teams of up to 16 paddlers from 33 teams crewed 40ft-long dragon-nosed boats up and down the River Nene.

And the event was brought to a thrilling climax, with crowds cheering the final three teams along the river.

But the winners, finishing the race in 51.68 seconds, were Sports Aid Speeders, from car dealership Crightons, with Viking Tulip, from Tulip Ltd as runners-up.

However, staff at the college in Fen Lane, Sawtry, are still celebrating after taking third place with their team, named Gabba 1.

Bobbies on the Beat came fifth overall and also won the mixed championship for having at least seven women taking part, while Sugar and Spice were the charity winners, after raising about 1,646 of the 11,000 raised in total.
