Pride: Ice work from Dave next door

GOOD Samaritan Dave Radwell is the worthy recipient of this week's Pride In Peterborough front page.During the recent cold snap, 42-year-old Mr Radwell was on hand to help out his wheelchair-bound next door neighbour Diana Seager (58) and her husband John (60), who were struggling to cope with the icy conditions.

Mr Radwell, who has a 4x4 vehicle, fetched vital supplies for the couple when they found themselves stuck at home worried about leaving the safety of their home because of the snow, ice and below zero temperatures.

But he hit out at the city council's neglect of their street, Gurnard Leys in Bretton, Peterborough, which left it like a "death trap."

He said: "You take your life into your hands when you go out there, it is like a death trap. The council should grit the street. There are a lot of elderly people scared to leave their homes."

Grateful neighbour Mr Seager said: "I don't feel safe driving here even in good conditions. Dave has been very helpful and we are extremely thankful."

The ice and snow have now thawed - but Mr Radwell says this will only worsen potholes which residents have been complaining about for eight years.

Mr Radwell said: "The potholes get bigger every time the ice comes.

"They are so big that they can take a smaller car off balance. I have seen dog walkers and cyclists falling after walking into them."

Highways maintenance team manager Peter Garnham said: "It would be physically impossible to grit every road and pavement, so we must prioritise the service to ensure the main routes are treated."

A council spokesperson said the highways team had no records of previous complaints.

She added: "If we have a complaint it would be reported immediately to the highways team. When we receive a report, one of our inspectors will go out to assess the problem."
