Peterborough Youth MP: It promises to be a busy year for Kamal Hyman

PETERBOROUGH’S new youth MP was born in Middlesex but his parents Lorna and Errol moved to Yaxley when he was 11, believing that north-west London wasn’t the best place to bring up a child.
Kamal, who also has a younger brother called Akeem (13), puts his oratorial and personal skills down to his upbringing.
He said: “They have bought me up to focus on things, to be full of ambition, and to always speak up about problems.
“I want people like Akeem to come forward and if they have ambitions. He is proud of me, and I am trying to get him to keep his dreams – he is a great singer and wants to do that in life.
“I can’t sit at home, I have to be doing something constructive. My only problem is that I speak too fast!”
That might come in handy during his upcoming duties as an MP, which he will attempt to balance with his many other interests:
n A-Levels: Kamal is studying performing arts, music technology, media studies and English Language. And then?
He said: “I don’t know if I will go to university or not. I ‘m still in the phase of not being sure what I want to do.
“I definitely want to have my own business, possibly being a DJ, but I’m not sure yet.”
n DJ: His show on Peterborough FM, a restricted service licence broadcaster, was known as “The Real Talkshow”. The show featured talks on the local community, current affairs and England’s world cup debacle, alongside slices from some of his favourite grime and hip-hop acts KRS-One, Nas and Wretch 32.
Local act Xidus Pain has helped Kamal with some of his own music, including an upcoming rapping project.
n Flash mobbing: Kamal burst from a melee of shoppers in Queensgate to start a recent show of “throwing shapes”, in an awesome display of dancing.
About 100 Stanground pupils cut some moves in the pre-arranged display in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
The unusual event can be seen on The Evening Telegraph website and was put together by teacher Becki Barnes, who also helped out with . . .
n The Artistic Street Kidz Krew: This street dance group performed fantastically well since its formation.
Similar to Diversity and Flawless, it won Peterborough Has Talent in 2009 and came second in the UK Street Dance Competition in 2009 and 2010.
Kamal said: “It was just a case of a load of us who used to dance in the playground, coming together to do something constructive.
“We have got teachers around us every day, and if you ask them for something, most of them will help you.
“And if teachers know that we sometimes need them to help us, they might come forward more.
“You might have small dreams but if you have big dreams you can build up to anything.”
n Can ‘anything’ get any better than tomorrow? That’s when his new outfit, a six-piece group formed with friend Asha Daley-Moore known as “The Movement” will be performing at a tiny little arena called the O2.
It’s part of Voice11, a Social Enterprise event bringing 130 exhibitors and more than 1,500 delegates together, aiming to make the external business environment truly supportive and truly fertile to social enterprise.
Kamal said: “We went to the O2 Think Big Programme to apply for funding, and because we went to them they wanted to give us the experience.
“It’s for the people of Peterborough, to represent them rather than battling other groups to prove you are the best. It’s about trying to influence and inspire.”
