Ortons: The Vikings invade a primary school

HUNTING, boat-building and the role of women were just some of the topics covered by Leighton Primary School pupils when they took a step back in time.

HUNTING, boat-building and the role of women were just some of the topics covered by Leighton Primary School pupils when they took a step back in time.Pupils at the school, in Orton Malborne, Peterborough, took part in a Viking dress-up day as part of Invader Week, a week aimed to teach pupils about the ancient invaders of Britain.

This was just one of the Enrichment Weeks that the school holds.

Activities included a Viking sleepover, in which pupils from Years 2 to 6 were invited to camp in the hall and enjoy several activities finishing with a barbecue and the telling of the legend of Beowulf, the great Scandinavian warrior of the late 5th century, before bed.

The week finished with a dress-up day that saw both pupils and staff slipping on their Viking costumes.

A Viking reanactment group also visited the school and gave some exciting demonstrations.

Headteacher of the school Mr Steward said; "We try to do an Enrichment Week once every half-term. The whole school gets involved and really enjoys them."

He added: "This Invader Week was a really good experience for the children and the sleepover was particularly popular. Staff and parents are still talking about the week's success."
