YOUNGSTERS at a Hampton school have been cooking on gas in lessons thanks to a donation from a business. The children at Hampton Vale Primary School, in Westlake Avenue, have been given a selection of cooking equipment to help them learn more about healthy eating in their classes.

In the past, chefs have visited the school to encourage the children to eat all the right things, and teachers have also organised a number of events to encourage pupils to lead healthy lifestyles.

The latest donation was made by the Hampton branch of Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, in Serpentine Green shopping centre, after staff heard about the healthy eating initiatives in class.

The branch donated wooden spoons, oven gloves, rolling pins, mixing bowls, baking trays, pastry cutters and other equipment to keep the 400 youngsters who attend the school – and their teachers – busy in the kitchen.

The school’s vice-chairwoman, Michelle Coles, said everyone at the school was looking forward to using the new kit.

She said: “We are extremely grateful to Norwich and Peterborough Building Society for the donation of the cooking utensils.

“We think that it’s important for children to learn about healthy eating as it may help prevent future weight and health problems as they grow up.

“The children can’t wait to get cooking.”

Customer advisor at Norwich and Peterborough’s Hampton branch Gemma Royce said she was delighted to hand over the equipment, and hoped the children would have great fun in the kitchen.

She said: “I think it’s great that schools are providing the facilities to enable children to learn more about food and its origins.

“It’ll be so much fun for them when they get to have a go in the kitchen and I’m delighted that we have been able to be part of that.”

In the past, the Hampton branch of the building society has donated equipment to a community garden in the township, first aid equipment to the local Scout group and training kit for a martial arts school.
